Uganda won the Rugby Africa 7s Cup to qualify for both the 2022 Rugby World cup in South Africa and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the United Kingdom.
The Nile Special Sponsored Rugby Cranes beat Zimbabwe 26-0 at Kyadondo Rugby Ground on Sunday in the repeat of 2017 final that was also a World Cup qualifier.
In 2017 Uganda beat Zimbabwe 10-7 at Legends to qualify for the 2018 San Francisco World Cup in the USA.
This is the third time Uganda winning the Rugby Africa 7s title with the first being in 2016, 2017 and now 2022.
In the final against Zimbabwe, Philip Wokorach gave Uganda a 7-0 lead half time with a try and conversion after an offload from Adrian Kasito.
Charged for a win in the second half team skipper Michael Wokorach added a try and Philip Wokorach a conversion stretch lead 14-0.
The cheetahs tried to fight back, but Timothy Kisiga added two tries for Uganda and conversion by Wokorach Philip to seal the score 26-0.
Team captain Michael Wokorach attributed the victory to teamwork, hard work and focus of the players.
“This Uganda victory is the hard work of all boys. It was an intense game but I thank the boys for the determination and focus,” Wokorach noted.
“I also thank all the fans for their support and this great team will be in a position to carry the Uganda flag high at both the World Cup and Commonwealth Games. “He added.
Uganda’s qualification fate was determined in the semi-final when they beat Kenya 22-12 while Zimbabwe beat Zambia 26-17.
In the third playoff, Kenya beat Zambia 19-12 to also qualify for the Rugby World cup.
Africa will now be represented by Uganda, Zimbabwe and Kenya in both the world Cup and Commonwealth Games.
