They came knocked and entered the champions’ room on their maiden attempt at winning the 2022 National Volleyball League.

The Orange Blockbusters (OBB) proved superior to all the other teams in the Serie A division when they beat Nemostars 2-1 to win the league title at Old Kampala Arena.

It was their first time featuring in the Serie A league.

The Busoga region-based side became the first upcountry team to break the dominance of the Kampala-based sides seeing off pre-title favourites Nemostars 2-1 in the best of three series on Labour Day evening at the Old Kampala Arena.

OBB won the first 25-22 in a tight contest but lost the second set following a knee injury of their star player John Bosco Opendi.  

He was replaced by Hussein Adome who could not fit well in his shoes. Opendi returned with the set at 22-20 in favour of Nemostars but had no magic to stop the charged defending champions who were chasing a fourth successive run.

Nemo won the set 25-20 but OBB regrouped to beat the three-time champions 25-19 before sealing their victory with a 25-21 win in the last set.

Opendi’s presence at the start of the third boosted OBB’s confidence and they took the set They eventually sealed the game when they won the fourth to claim a 3-1 win.

OBB Coach Lawrence Yakan Guma noted that his focus is now on the continental competition where he wants to write a mark.

“We delighted winning this league. It was a hard fight but now our focus turns to the Africa championship,” he said.

They were crowned champions by Justice Musa Sekaana the head of the High Court Civil Division who is the patron Uganda Volleyball Federation.
