The Stanbic Black Pirates beat defending champions Platinum Credit Heathens 24-18 to end the Kyadondo Boys dominance in the Nile Special Rugby Premier League.

Pirates also ended the Heathens dominance at Kings Park Arena, Bweyogerere since 2019. Pirates have been losing to Heathens till January 14,2023 when their winning form came to end.

The sea robbers also ended the unbeaten run of the yellow machines in both 2022 league and 2023 rugby season as the won both the League and Uganda cup unbeaten.

“It was a tough game and I thank the boys who put up that resilience to win this game. This victory gives us hope that the league is ours,” Magomu noted with lots of excitement.

“We just have to captalise on this victory win all games in the first round before enter the toughest stage which is the second leg,”Magomu said.

However, his Heathens counterpart Michael Wokorach told USPA media that,” It was hard for us , but we shall bounce back big.”

Joshua Engwau, timothy Kisiga and Alex Aturinda managed a try each while William Nkore added a conversion to give Pirates 19-10 half time lead.

Michael Wokorach managed a try, Chris Lubanga a penalty and Joseph Oyet a conversion.

In the second half, the Kyadondo side mounted pressure and managed to get penalty to take 19-13, but the hosts quickly responded with a try by Moses Olwenyi to stretch the lead 24-13.

Heathens fought back getting a try by Nobert Okenyi but time was not on their side and the referee blew the final whistle at 24-13 sending pirates fans into celebrations.

The Pirates’ Alex Aturinda was voted Man of the match for his great contributions to success.

 Meanwhile in the other games, Walukuba received a rude welcome in the premier League with 76-0 beating by Kobs, Hippos also suffered 25-22 upset by Makerere Impis, Toyota Buffaloes beat Rhinos 40-12 while Plascon Mongers defeated Rams 11-9.

The league continues on Saturday alongside women league that will have top sides Black Pearls and Entebbe Avengers battle it out.
