Uganda’s Gazelles rest today Friday, February 17, 2023, after drawing the sword against South Sudan last night with a 74-53 victory in the ongoing Zone Five Afrobasket tournament at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
Mariah Najjuma with a double of 10 points and 18 rebounds flanked by Brenda Ekone and Hope Akello with 14 points, Uganda won the game with a 21-point difference.
Brilliant teamwork from other players that featured on the scoreboard including Jannon Otto with 13 points while Flavia Oketcho made several assists and ball distribution to ease the tight marking on Otto, herself and other key players in previous games. Lone score points for South Sudan came from UCU Lady Canon’s Rose Akon, who scored in doubles 15 points to lift her side.
Uganda’s target is now to book a place in the final once they crack a whip on Rwanda tomorrow to seal their group-stage showdown. Victory against Rwanda will guarantee Gazelles a slot in the finals on Sunday a tie in which the winner proceeds for the Afrobasket Tournament slated for July in Kigali, Rwanda.
